Browser of the Week, Opera Woes
February 12, 2008 – 3:52 pmI’ve had a couple of problems with Opera today. The first is the Google Reader issue I mentioned yesterday. It seems to occur when I scroll down the items in a feed using the mouse wheel. At a certain point, the feed window stop scrolling and the whole pane moves up, leaving a bunch of empty space at the bottom. (The mysterious missing “Manage subscriptions link” has reappeared, however.) This is makes scrolling through feed contents quite awkward.

My CPU has also been pegged at 80-90% for the past few hours, with Activity Monitor pointing to Opera as the culprit. It seems like this page is to blame. After closing and reopening it, the problem has gone away, at least for now.
Update: Daniel Goldman of Opera suggested that I upgrade to the latest beta version (Opera 9.5 beta). I did so and this appears to have fixed the Google Reader problem. Thanks, Daniel! The new version did blow out my session, saved passwords and speed dial, but I expect that is a beta bug that will be fixed in the final version. Or did I do something wrong when I installed it?

Which version of Opera are you using? We’ve done lots of improvements to our rendering engine in Opera 9.5 beta, I’d suggest you use that version of Opera during this week’s trial.

Did you choose upgrade while installing? I never had this problem when upgrading Opera.

I’m on a Mac, so I just copied the Opera app into the Applications folder. If there’s a more correct way to do this, please let me know and I’ll post a clarification.
